Psycho-Sleuth's Live2D and Hand-Drawn Animation

Every frame of Psycho-Sleuth's cutscenes is drawn by hand, and all 13 leads use Live2D. Here's how the animation team built its most expensive asset.

Psycho-Sleuth's visuals draw on Live2D character portraits and on separately produced hand-drawn animation with After Effects work. The Steam store page describes the Live2D portraits as breathing "every emotional decision and nuance to life," while high-quality CG sets the stage for tense interrogations and the punishments that follow a culprit's exposure.

Live2D for all thirteen main characters

The Live2D work is not limited to a handful of leads. In the September 15, 2026 release-date announcement, the developers listed "Live2D animations for all 13 main characters" among the game's production totals, alongside 40 CGs, dozens of 3D backgrounds, more than 50 original BGM tracks, over 500,000 characters of script, and over 10,000 lines of Japanese voice acting.

Third-party coverage has picked up on the same technique. In Automaton West's write-up, the game's anime aesthetic is described as "brought to life through Live2D animations and CG sets." The MonsterVine review notes that character sprites are animated through Live2D to liven up scenes, though that reviewer found the movement "a little uncanny" at times.

Hand-drawn frames and After Effects

A June 12, 2026 developer log on Steam describes in-game animation in production, with each frame drawn one by one "only to become a single second on screen." The team called this "a luxury," but framed it as part of delivering the best possible experience to players.

The release-date announcement counted "dozens of After Effects & hand-drawn animations" alongside the Live2D work, indicating that effects work and drawn frames were both part of the production.

Animation work as a spoiler risk

An April 10, 2026 dev log explains that the story is made up of five chapters and that the team was pushing hard on Chapter 4 at the time. At that stage, most of the newly written scenes and art assets could not be shown, because they would spoil too much of the plot.

That is a useful thing to know when watching trailers: the developers said the scenes and art assets they could show at that point were limited by what the story would allow them to reveal.

How it compares to other mystery visual novels

The comparison points are deliberate. According to a publisher statement reported by Games Press, PHOSEPO producer Xiaolu said the team had "always loved mystery games like Danganronpa and Ace Attorney" and wanted to make one of their own, but chose to build cognitive disorder directly into the mystery rather than follow the traditional formula. The NookGaming review goes further, saying the influence from Danganronpa is apparent enough that parts of the game "feel incredibly similar."

What that means in practice is a visual novel that pairs Live2D-animated character sprites with separately produced hand-drawn and After Effects animation. According to the game's itch.io page, no generative AI was used in its creation.
