Psycho-Sleuth is a 2D, visual-novel-style mystery game. Its look is built from character art animated with Live2D, 40 CGs, dozens of 3D backgrounds, and dozens of After Effects and hand-drawn animations. In practice that means a stylized, illustrated presentation rather than a fully 3D world: you look at scenes, portraits and CG rather than moving a camera through them.

Adventure Game Hotspot catalogues the game as 2D or 2.5D with a slideshow presentation, a stylized graphic style, a first-person perspective, point-and-click controls and mystery among its genres. That lines up with the store description, which leans on illustrated presentation: Live2D portraits that carry every emotional beat, and high-quality CG used for interrogations and punishments.

The 40 CGs, and what they show

The clearest numbers come from the development team's release date announcement, which tallied the project's content: 40 CGs, dozens of 3D backgrounds, dozens of After Effects and hand-drawn animations, Live2D animations for all 13 main characters, 50+ original BGM tracks, over 500,000 characters of script and over 10,000 lines of Japanese voice acting.

A separate announcement marking the game's release says the team kept adding characters, cutscenes, voice acting and music as development went on, to the point that they were surprised by how much the game had grown.

As for what the CGs depict, the store description says high-quality CG sets the stage for tense interrogations and shocking punishments, and that when a culprit is revealed they face a punishment shaped by their own cognitive disorder. The release date announcement does not break the 40 down scene by scene or chapter by chapter, so a per-CG list is not officially documented yet.

Live2D portraits for all 13 characters

Every one of the 13 main characters has Live2D animation, according to the release date announcement. The store description frames this as portraits that breathe every emotional decision and nuance to life.

Not every reaction to that style is positive. MonsterVine notes that character sprites are animated through Live2D to liven up scenes, but found their movement a little uncanny. That is one reviewer's impression, not an official description of the animation.

Hand-drawn and After Effects animation

Animation has been a visible part of the production since well before release. A June 2026 developer log describes in-game animation being in production, with each frame drawn one by one only to become a single second on screen — the team called it a luxury, but one they hoped would improve the experience. The release date announcement later counted dozens of After Effects and hand-drawn animations in the finished game.

The demo's cutscenes were also revised ahead of release. The release announcement says the demo was polished up with changes that added more to the cutscenes, including important clues and foreshadowing, alongside reworked pacing for cases, deduction, combat and story. The announcement describes this as work the team went back and did, rather than detailing exactly which footage changed.

Art direction, gore, and accessibility

The overall art direction is stylized, per Adventure Game Hotspot's listing. The subject matter is not soft: according to MonsterVine, murder scenes can be quite bloody, showing things like chopped-off limbs, and the game offers an option to censor the gorier aspects if you prefer.

On the accessibility side, the Steam feature list includes Color Alternatives, Subtitle Options, Adjustable Difficulty, Playable without Timed Input, Save Anytime, Custom Volume Controls, Stereo Sound and full controller support. The feature list names Color Alternatives without explaining what it changes in practice, so that detail is not officially documented yet.

Where to see the art before buying

The most direct option is the free demo, which the release announcement confirms will remain available on Steam even after the full release, polished with the changes the team describes rather than left as it was. The Steam store page is where that demo and the game itself live. Adventure Game Hotspot's page for the game also collects four trailers: the launch trailer, the release date reveal trailer, the Steam Next Fest trailer and the announcement trailer.

If you want the art as a product rather than a preview, the release announcement mentions an official soundtrack and an artbook sold alongside the base game, with a Deluxe Edition bundling all three. The announcement lists the artbook but does not give its page count or contents.
